Dear AACUSS Member,

Thank you for taking the time to consider this invitation.

My colleague, Dr. Peggy Patterson and I are conducting a research study
entitled: Digitization of Student Services: A Canadian Perspective. The
purpose of this research is twofold: First to identify and understand the
current status of online Student Services within Canadian universities and
colleges; and second to propose recommendations for the development and
delivery of online Student Services within Canadian universities and colleges.

Given your current affiliation with the Student Services profession I would like
to invite your participation in the study. Your participation is completely
voluntary and all information and results will be treated in confidence and
remain anonymous in any report of the research findings.

The study, should you agree to participate, will involve an on line quantitative
survey that should take approximately between fifteen to thirty minutes for you
to complete. You may refuse to answer any questions or may at any time choose
to discontinue your participation in this survey without any penalty. Should
you choose to participate you can complete the survey online and submit it
electronically. Your submission is anonymous.

Should you agree to participate you can access the online survey at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6TXCDRX

Given that you may be a member of other Student Services type associations in
Canada you may receive this invitation via another membership connection — we
ask kindly that you complete the survey only once to help us ensure accuracy.

Sincerely,

Tamara Leary, EdD

2013 AACUSS Conference: Call for Papers The Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services (AACUSS) annual conference will be [...]

2013 AACUSS Conference: Call for Papers

The Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services (AACUSS) annual conference will be hosted at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia from May 21st- 23rd 2013. We look forward to welcoming you to Acadia University and the beautiful Annapolis Valley this year for a fun-filled few days of learning, sharing and networking.

This year’s conference theme is

“Mission Possible: Equipping Change Agents – Individual, Environmental, Systems”.

The AACUSS conference provides an environment to explore innovative ideas, share best practices and contribute to the growth and future direction of student services in turn lending itself to the development of our students. We are currently inviting proposals to present at this year’s conference and to learn from your knowledge and experience with professionals from the Atlantic region.

In an era when we are faced with limited resources and restricted time, coordinating resources, communicating with all stakeholders and developing a comprehensive work plan is critical in order to ensure our success. A method that has been employed successfully in public health, specifically in the areas of substance abuse and mental health, is the comprehensive approach of: Individual, Environmental, and Systems.

Research suggests that the best way to ensure long-term success is to take a comprehensive approach. A comprehensive approach uses multiple evidence-based interventions that together complement and support in improving health and wellness. The multiple interventions need to be drawn from three strategic directions: (1) those that are implemented at a “systems” level (evidence-based policies implemented at the municipal, provincial and/or federal levels of government); (2) those that address the environment in which the student lives (such as policies that restrict alcohol, promote healthy living, reduce stigma); and, (3) those directed at supporting the individual (such as screening and counseling services).

It is suggested that any framework that is developed and implemented should include as many interventions from each of these three strategic directions as possible. Interventions at the environment and systems level have the greatest longer-term potential for success and they should be pursued with equal vigor as with those directed at helping the individual student.

We invite submissions from our colleagues about examples of programs, policies, initiatives that you are either currently working on or have successfully implemented at your campus. The intention of the conference is to learn from others and collect ideas and resources that we can add to our tool box, customize and bring back to our institutions for successful implementation and change, while at the same time discussing how these initiatives are implemented at the systems level, in which environments, and how it supports the individual student.

Our mission in Student Services is still a “mission possible” and will become even more possible for us as professionals when we learn from others, and motivate ourselves, once again, to continue to evolve along with our current student population and all that they are faced with in this day and age.

Proposals should be no more than 250 words and demonstrate a connection between your presentation topic and critical issues in the field. Each presentation should be designed to fit within a seventy-five minute time frame. Please be sure to include a summary of your key points, themes, rationale and information concerning the theoretical foundation of your program, learning outcomes and any relevant resources. It is recommended that you try to incorporate the theme; however it is not necessary in order to present.

Please submit your proposal in pdf format to program@aacuss.ca

Accepting Proposals beginning February 15th 2013

Presenters will be informed of the status of their proposal no later than April 19th 2013.

You may also direct any queries regarding the conference program and the program submission process to program@aacuss.ca

Join us as we become better equipped to initiate change and development on our campuses. We look forward to seeing you in Wolfville!
