AACUSS Conference

Dear colleagues:

UPEI is proud to host this year’s annual AACUSS conference May 27th – May 30th. The theme is Collaboration: the good, the bad, and the ugly and we are planning on exploring some of the very pragmatic approaches, through collaboration, people are using in their daily work to achieve success for themselves, their colleagues, and their students. Whether you love collaboration or steer clear whenever possible, it remains fundamental to our work and our successes and failures.

With that, success and failure in our work as student service professionals depends on a number of factors. Some are within our control – others are not. It is what we do with those in our control that will allow us to achieve amazing things personally and professionally. Are you ready to take control? Are you ready to share your stories of success and failure with friends and colleagues? Are you ready to lead a presentation at AACUSS 2012?

Understanding the importance of sharing and collaborating is why AACUSS has been a success for so long and a model association for student services professionals across the country. Whether this will be your first presentation at a professional conference or you’re a seasoned pro, AACUSS 2012 wants to hear from you. Step up, take control, collaborate if you like, but submit your proposal.

Submitting a Proposal:

If you are interested in submitting a proposal for presentation at AACUSS 2012: Collaboration: the good, the bad, and the ugly, please complete the online form:

(If you are having any problems accessing the online form please try cutting and pasting link into your web browser and if you are still having problems accessing the online form email kthomason@upei.ca)

All proposals must be submitted no later than: February 29th 2012.

Thank you and let’s have a great conference.

Sincerely,

Your AACUSS 2012 Program Committee

On behalf of the Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPEI to host Regional Conference on Student Services

Charlottetown, PEI (January 9, 2012)—From Sunday, May 27 to Wednesday, May 30, 2012, the University of Prince Edward Island will host the annual conference of the Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services (AACUSS).

Every spring, professionals who work directly with students at post-secondary institutions across the Atlantic provinces gather to share best practices, professional development, and research. This year’s conference theme is Collaboration: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The focus will be on sharing pragmatic collaborative solutions and creative strategies for making the student experience successful.

The AACUSS membership is made up of student affairs officers and professionals from counselling, health services, financial aid, housing, accessibility services, international services, career services, and other areas that deal directly with student life. At this year’s annual general meeting, a new division for academic support services will be established.

“We want to offer tangible takeaways for our membership,” says James Reddin, conference chair and counsellor at UPEI Student Services. “Open dialogue about how we use collaboration to get the job done —or not— is critical to student engagement, retention and success.”

AACUSS 2012 will engage participants with exciting keynote speakers and showcase the considerable talents of student services professionals right here at home. Conference participants are invited to give presentations and workshops or participate in panel discussions about how collaboration works on their campuses. The AACUSS conference also offers a unique networking opportunity with social events and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding achievement in the field.

In January, watch for more information on AACUSS 2012 on aacuss.ca.

As the first semester draws to a close, I know that many of you are looking forward to a well-deserved holiday, time to rest up and recharge for the next term. It is true, though, that in spite of all the challenges we face in student affairs, there is much to be grateful for and lots to look forward to in 2012–including the AACUSS spring conference!

Our colleagues at the University of Prince Edward Island will be hosting the annual AACUSS conference May 27 to 30, 2012. This year’s conference theme is Collaboration: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The focus will be on sharing pragmatic collaborative solutions and creative strategies for making the student experience successful.

More information will be coming in January 2012 from the conference committee, chaired by James Reddin. Perhaps, though, while you relax over the holidays, you might give some thought to how you will participate in the conference. Consider giving a presentation or a delivering a workshop or participating in a panel discussion. Share with us how collaboration works on your campus.

Our next issue of AACUSS Talks will be out in late January. You are welcome to submit articles–short or long–to communications@aacuss.ca . Thea deadline is January 16.

On behalf of the AACUSS Executive, I wish you all peace and joy for the holiday season and throughout the new year.

With warmest wishes,

Anne Forrestall
President
AACUSS
